There’s something powerful about seeing the problem up close.

For our first Unsalted Seas beach cleanup, we spent just one hour walking a small section of Park Point in Duluth, Minnesota. We covered roughly 100 yards of shoreline by 100 feet wide—a relatively small piece of one of the Great Lakes’ most beautiful beaches.

In that one hour, we collected 15 pounds of plastic debris.

Fifteen pounds.

From one small section of beach. In one hour.

And that’s exactly why we believe this work matters.

A Small Cleanup With a Big Reminder

Plastic pollution can be easy to overlook. A piece of fishing line tangled in the sand. A fragment of a bottle. A broken piece of packaging. Tiny pieces of plastic that blend into the rocks and sand.

Over time, those larger pieces can break down into smaller and smaller particles—eventually becoming microplastics that can make their way into our waterways and the Great Lakes.

Lake Superior is an incredible place. It provides drinking water, supports wildlife, shapes our communities, and gives us countless places to explore, surf, hike, paddle, fish, and simply sit along the shore.

We don't want plastic to be part of that story.

Why Unsalted Seas Exists

At its heart, Unsalted Seas is a lifestyle apparel brand that celebrates the Great Lakes—the places we love, the communities that surround them, and the people who feel connected to these waters.

We make apparel because we love this place.

But we also believe that celebrating somewhere comes with a responsibility to take care of it.

Our goal isn't to pretend that selling a T-shirt is going to solve the problem of plastic pollution. It won't. But we believe a brand can do more than simply put a cool graphic on a shirt.

It can create awareness.

It can start conversations.

It can get people outside.

It can inspire people to pick up a piece of trash when they see one.

And it can use its platform and resources to support organizations doing the hard work of fighting microplastic pollution and protecting the Great Lakes.

That's the bigger idea behind Unsalted Seas.

15 Pounds Is Just the Beginning

Our first cleanup covered only a tiny portion of Park Point. We didn't clean the whole beach. We didn't spend all day doing it. We didn't have a massive crew.

We simply showed up for an hour and started picking things up.

And 15 pounds later, we were reminded that small actions can make a difference.

There will always be more plastic on the beach. There will always be more work to do. That's not a reason to give up—it's a reason to keep going.

We want beach cleanups to become part of what Unsalted Seas does. We want to continue getting people together, getting our hands dirty, and helping keep plastic out of the Great Lakes.

We'll also continue looking for ways to support nonprofits and organizations working to address microplastics and protect these waters on a larger scale.

Celebrate It. Protect It.

Unsalted Seas is about celebrating the Great Lakes.

It's about Lake Superior sunsets, cold water, rocky shorelines, North Shore adventures, beach days, and the places that make this region unlike anywhere else.

But celebrating the Great Lakes shouldn't stop at wearing something that represents them.

It should inspire us to protect them.

That means picking up trash.

It means thinking about the products we buy and the materials we put into the environment.

It means supporting organizations doing important work.

And sometimes, it simply means spending an hour walking the beach and filling a bag with plastic.

Our first cleanup was small.

100 yards. 100 feet wide. One hour. 15 pounds of plastic.

But it's a start.

And if we're going to build a brand around a place we love, we want to make sure we're doing our part to keep that place beautiful for the people—and generations—that come after us.

No Salt. No Rival. Let's keep it that way.
