Lake Huron is one of the five Great Lakes, shared by Michigan in the United States and Ontario in Canada. It is the second-largest Great Lake by surface area and has the longest shoreline of the group—about 3,827 miles when its many islands and bays are included. More than 30,000 islands dot Lake Huron, including Manitoulin Island, the world’s largest freshwater island. Lake Huron is also directly connected to Lake Michigan through the Straits of Mackinac; because the lakes sit at the same elevation and exchange water freely, they are sometimes considered a single hydrological system. The lake supports fishing, boating, tourism, and shoreline communities while holding a deep history of Indigenous peoples, shipping, and shipwrecks.

The shoreline of Lake Huron extends 3,827 miles and is home to 30,000 islands. It's 579 feet above sea level, and its maximum depth is 750 feet. About two-thirds of its watershed is covered by forests.
